Useful Apologetics Resources: Websites

We love websites and online articles, and if you’re reading this, you might just like them too. For accessible starting-points for various tough questions, the world wide web is a great medium to host Christian Apologetics content.
Over the next three weeks we want to highlight three different sources of useful training that will help you grow in your own apologetics and evangelism. First up, websites.
So here are five (in no particular order) fantastic online resource centres.
The Poached Egg
What they say:
The Poached Egg

The Poached Egg is a large and continually expanding virtual library of articles and essays compiled from all over the World Wide Web. Noted apologists, biblical scholars, philosophers, scientists, historians, students, and laymen all come together under this one site.

What we say:
Greg West does an excellent job of finding articles from all over the web and bringing them under ‘one roof’. Frequently updated and with a good archive there’s plenty to learn from here.
Apologetics 315
Apologetics 315
What they say:

The vision of Apologetics 315 is to provide educational resources for the defense of the Christian faith, with the goal of strengthening the faith of believers and engaging the questions and challenges of other worldviews.

What we say:
Great website, jam-packed with quality content and links to further resources. Updated frequently. We love this site.
RZIM (EU)
RZIMWhat they say:

Ravi Zacharias International Ministries (RZIM) exists to reach those who have objections and questions about the Christian faith, and seeks to challenge those who shape the ideas of our culture with the credibility of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

What we say:
The RZIM Europe team are frequently speaking, writing, and debating all over the world. They run a world-class training centre within the University of Oxford (more on that later) and much of the content they produce is linked to online, from talks to articles to Q&A sessions.
Reasonable Faith
Reasonable FaithWhat they say:

Reasonable Faith aims to provide in the public arena an intelligent, articulate, and uncompromising yet gracious Christian perspective on the most important issues concerning the truth of the Christian faith today.

What we say:
William Lane Craig is one of the foremost Christian philosophers of his time. His contribution to the area of Apologetics is huge. Craig often defends the faith in robust intellectual environments and is asked to speak all over the world in prestigious universities. However, it’s Craig’s desire that the church may be better equipped to answer objections that has led to him producing many great resources for the ‘guy in the pew’. Lots of great material here.
BeThinking
BeThinkingWhat they say:

bethinking.org aims to bring together the best possible resources for thinking about and communicating the Christian faith. Its goal is to help to prepare all Christians to provide an answer to those who deny the truth of Christianity.

What we say:
A really clear introduction into some of the big subjects within Christian Apologetics. Broken down into ‘Introductory’ ‘Intermediate’ and ‘Advanced’ sections, there’s lots to learn about here and at whatever level you’re looking for.
The Unbelievable? Podcast (ht Trevor)
The Unbelievable? PodcastWhat they say:

So you want to find a discussion on Islam? Science? The Bible? Explore the vast and growing archive of “Unbelievable?” debate programmes in this thematic index. Click on one of the four categories above – ‘Christianity’, ‘Cults and New Age’, ‘World Religions’ or ‘Atheism’.

What we say:
Justin Brierley does an excellent job with his weekly podcast attracting the leading intellectuals of our time to discuss Christianity. Lots of big names and lots of interesting debates. A rich archive, both audio and video, gives you a great taste of what is offered. Tune in on Saturdays at 2pm and subscribe to the feed. You wont want to miss an episode.
Reasons To Believe (ht Jiminy)
Reasons To Believe
What they say:

RTB’s mission is to spread the Christian Gospel by demonstrating that sound reason and scientific research—including the very latest discoveries—consistently support, rather than erode, confidence in the truth of the Bible and faith in the personal, transcendent God revealed in both Scripture and nature.

What we say:
Astronomer Hugh Ross and the Reasons To Believe team do a great job of presenting the arguments surrounding the interplay of faith and science. A great website with plenty of resources from across the field of science – if you have questions from science about faith in God, start your search for answers here.

Although I’m biased (my mate runs it!), many people have found “Jesus-the Evidence” (jesustheevidence.com) helpful. It comes in 3 varieties – the website itself, in-person presentations up and down the country (pretty much Scotland so far – but willing to travel), and a downloadable PDF booklet which has also been posted all over the world. It’s a no-nonsense rational approach, stemming directly from an ex-agnostic’s extensive researches in the area, which can act as a stepping stone to personal faith, especially for those who are rational/scientifically minded.

OK, cool. so… You guys should definitely check out The Gospel Coalition. You can even get an app for Android (for sure) and Apple I think.

Thanks Sean! I was lucky enough to go to the 2009 National Conference and have kept in touch with these guys ever since. Really happy to see all the material from the recent 2013 conference online for free now.
As they’re not just apologetics we haven’t added them to this list. But we benefit greatly from what they produce and like them a lot.

A great list — I’d just add the Canadian branch of RZIM (headed up by a Brit — hoorah) to the list (rzim.ca) as well as the main RZIM site (rzim.org) with lots of Ravi material.

I would say that Reasons to Believe (www.reasons.org) is a good resource as well, particularly within the scientific area. Astronomer Hugh Ross heads it up, they have an easy to navigate site and they put nice articles up frequently.

My favorite two websites are Reasons to Believe, which you already mentioned and one that has material suitable for school age kids, http://www.doesgodexist.org. I teach Old Earth Creationism Christian Evidences at a Christian high school in Florida.

Hello Mr. Sherwin, I have been studying Christian apologetics sites looking
for anything that would help me “reason” with a friend who although originally
a Christian is presently being deceived by “Conspiracy Theories” which
includes the belief that 9/11 was planned and executed by the American
government!! not terrorists of Islamic origin, Illuminati perpetrations, etc.
Do you know of any resources? Regards, Mark (Calgary)

Hi Mark. Thanks for the question. I’ve run into this too on occasion.
I don’t have a list of resources to hand debunking these “conspiracy theories”. In my experience someone who might hold to one of these views is quite likely to hold to another. Maybe this is the same for you?
I suppose that I try to not get too caught up in them, to be honest. I do love to talk about ideas – but I have to set limits on what I get in to. If the belief being held gets in the way of seeing who Jesus is, and moves into the realm of ‘obstacle to belief’ I would want to get in to it. However in my experience I’ve found many of these arguments can be sidetracks.
If specific claims of the Christian message are being brought into question solely on the basis of belief in a “conspiracy theory” I would seek to move to looking at the grounds for belief for that Christian claim, and then compare them to the theory being touted. This puts the emphasis back on Christian belief – and not on the competing theory. If we can provide good grounds for belief in the Christian claim then that provides a good argument against the theory being presented against it.
I have yet to find a theory – something like 9/11 being an ‘inside job’ – having enough wait in and of itself to compete with a core Christian claim. But this is only my experience! I may well have to do more research in the future if I face stronger objections, it’s just not been my experience to date.
Sorry to not be of more help. Thanks for getting in touch.

Hi Paul, thanks for these valuable resources. I particularly enjoy Reasons to Believe and Reasonable Faith. I’d like to suggest another, so far lesser known, website with a very interesting approach to apologetics. The website I’m referring to is http://www.typologetics.com, and uses a form of typology meshed with literary criticism of the sacred texts to demonstrate divine authorship. The website is http://www.typologetics.com. I hope you would consider adding it to your post.
    Blessings.
    Ross
